The zombie illness has shattered civilization. The survivors who have found tenuous safety in Texas defend their fort against the walking dead and living bandits.

Katie has made peace with the death of her wife and is pregnant and married to Travis, who has been elected Mayor. Jenni, her stepson, Jason; and Juan—Travis’s righthand man—are a happy family, though Jenni suffers from PTSD. Both women are deadly zombie killers.

In Siege, the people of Ashley Oaks are stunned to discover that the vice president of the United States is alive and commanding the remnants of the US military. What’s left of the US government has plans for this group of determined survivors.

I was sent a copy of this book to review from Tor. All opinions are my own and I was not compensated in any way for them.

Review:

*spoiler light*

Fanfrickentabulous is the first word that comes to mind when thinking of the conclusion to this series. Yes I know it's a made up word but honestly that is how I can describe it, so deal with it. The book starts out with Jenni dreaming about those tiny fingers. Wracked with guilt, her dreams are a way for her to come to terms with her children's deaths. Their deaths shape and mold Jenni and how she behaves throughout the series and especially this book. It was fantastic seeing her Journey from this crazy, bitchy, unpleasant woman to this wife, protector and all around bad ass.

Katie on the other hand has finally come to terms with Lydia's death. She and Travis are happy and even expecting a bundle of joy. Her character takes a serious step out of the spotlight this book, with the focus primarily on other survivors and her husband. Katie does however get some closure regarding her Father and I tell you now to have tissues handy. Those couple chapters are tearjerkers.

As for the other survivors they all had a role to play. Many couples came together during this book, showing that life indeed does move on. On the other hand this book had a lot of loss. Not only in terms of character deaths at the hands of Zombies, also loss of friendship, sanity and belief.

As for the Zombie mayhem, wow is all I can say. Some of the best scenes were at the hands of the Zombies. While we never find out why the Zombies rose, I don't think in the end it mattered.

Now even though I loved this book, I did have a few complaints. My first is the term Faggot to describe Ken. Even those who pretend to love and be close to him called him that. I am sure he's been called worse in his life but I personally felt it did a disservice to this new world to have that term so casually used. Faggot should be a term kept to the old world, filled with hate filled bigots.

Secondly I really didn't like the ghosts. When the characters were dreaming, it made sense that the characters were trying to reconcile turmoil within them by interacting with the dead. Then all of a sudden they become corporeal and interact with the living, it just seemed silly. At the very least I hope Rhiannon makes a book showing the Ghosts point of view during this whole thing. I think it would be interesting hearing what it was like when they realized they were ghosts, could interact with the living and even see the future wherever they existed. So if you read this Rhiannon please give us An As The World Dies Ghost edition!!!

Third, Peggy. Enough Said.

Overall this was a fantastic series and a great conclusion. Would I like to read more? Hell yeah! I would love to see how these characters end up 5-10 years down the road. This by far was one of the best multi-book Zombie reads I have had in a really long time. From start to finish, this series had everything one could ask for, Love,Death,Action, and most importantly Hope. Nothing is worse than a series that ends on a downer. I'd like to think even if the Zombies wiped out the majority, others would survive and thrive. Rhiannon chose to believe that and I am grateful it concluded that way. So in the end what am I rating this book? I am giving Rhiannon Frater's Siege 5 Stars ★★★★★! If you haven't checked out this series yet, I highly suggest you do, reread it even, I know I will be. .

  1. I loved this book, too. Jenni became one of my all-time favorite heroines. I don't get very emotional when I read books, but this one had me crying all night. The scene (I'm sure you can guess which one I mean) just killed me. And the aftermath, too. Great review!
